10 down…110 to go

Posted by Tim on Sep 26, 2009

So we just finished the 2nd day of our 24-day run at the State Fair. You might think that after 10 years this would get old. But it doesn’t. It truly is one of the highlights of my year. And seeing thousands of people EVERY day diggin’ on the music is quite a thrill. Yesterday saw a great turnout for opening day, and we already have seen alot of familiar faces and signed alot of CDs.  With 5 shows a day, there are also plenty of chances to get “in the zone” with the music.  Today was one of those days.  I was right in the pocket from the first downbeat of Set 1, and I’m really starting to gel w/ Troy.  I’m just lovin’ the bass groove he lays so I can be alot more creative on the drums.  Makes the music alot more fun, and the shows in the end just drive on their own.

Yesterday the weather was simply brilliant, and everything went off without a hitch.  We fell right in line and rocked all 5 shows.  But today it was close to 90 degrees, which made for a really hot first (and second) set. No worries…I’m already gettin’ a great farmer tan.

The crowds kept growing as the afternoon went on, and by the 5:00 and 6:00 shows, we had a great energy building.  This State Fair gig is always so special because the crowds are so varied.  No barriers w/ age, gender, race or creed.  And all of them getting into it.  Proof that this style of music deserves to be heard by all.

One image stands out in my mind.  I saw a little boy with Down’s syndrome LOVIN’ it.  He watched Brek like a hawk, and was mimicking everything Brek did.  When Brek jumped, he jumped.  When Brek rocked back ‘n forth, the little boy did the same.  It was all I needed to see to get me through the day.  Just another reason why I love this job.  Day 3 starts tomorrow.  Gotta run…U2 is on SNL.
